Over the last few months, we’ve encouraged visitors and members to “find their path to nature” on our 380 acre property. But what exactly does that mean?
At Daniel Stowe Conservancy, we believe there’s no single “right” way to connect with nature, which is why we see it as a pathway where everyone can shape their own experience. Our property, botanical gardens and beyond, has been a solace where our community can create unforgettable outdoor experiences. We know that these experiences look different for everyone. Maybe strolling through the Gardens, taking in the vibrant colors and sweet scents of the blooms, is your preferred path to nature. Maybe your path to nature is a weekly outdoor meet-up with friends on The Trailhead Store patio, letting the kids romp in a beautiful, natural playscape. Maybe you love nothing more than a nice long hike through the winding woodland trails…and maybe even getting a little lost in the breathtaking scenery. Or maybe you want get out and explore, but don’t know where to begin. Wherever you are on your journey, we’ll help you find your path and encourage you to embark on new, exciting outdoor adventures along the way.

Our founder, Daniel Stowe, had a vision in the early 90s that 380 acres in the heart of the Piedmont could bring the benefits of nature to life. In a world increasingly moving toward cities, nature still connects with something deep inside us. We’re not only helping people discover their path to nature, but helping them unlock their better nature. Spending time in nature reminds you what it means to be human. It provides countless benefits and allows every single person to be part of something bigger than ourselves. Even though Daniel Stowe Conservancy will grow and change, we will continue to inspire everyone – young and old – to be in partnership with nature. Let’s walk the path that Dan Stowe laid, step-by-step, together.
Your Path to Nature is
A place to have fun without boundaries.
A place that’s part of your routine and helps you get outside.
A place that isn’t tailor-made or pre-determined; it’s as varied as your capacity to dream.
A place that is literally alive, and make you feel alive when you’re there.
“Our staff can’t wait to make this new promise to our guests,” says Stowe Executive Director and CEO John Searby, “to help all discover their path to nature. When Dan Stowe set this property aside, he was clear that it was for all to enjoy and be inspired by the beauty of nature. We believe that not only does our new brand communicate that intent, but that the renovations and enhancement we have made this spring will make that a reality.”
Some of these renovations and enhancements include:
- Expanded food and drink options so that you can easily plan a full day outdoors and keep the whole family happy.
- The new Farmhouse Garden Center (opening May 3), so you can better cultivate your own green thumb.
- The new Prairie Castle Playground and Adventure Trail (opening June) to provide a natural, exciting playscape for kids to jump, imagine and explore.
- New trails and trail systems, putting us at over eight miles of scenic trails on the property that include diverse landscape views, from the shores of Lake Wylie to peaceful woodlands to our Piedmont prairie.
Our members have already been exploring their own personal path to nature at Stowe:
“My path to nature is back to nature at Stowe. After moving here from upstate New York and all its glorious picturesque parks, we longed to find that nature connection here in North Carolina. We found our nature path at Stowe. The winding walking paths amongst vibrant colors of all shapes and sizes are a natural delight. Your own path can lead you to the breathtaking Conservatory or rapturous fountain at the end of a long walkway, through a sculpted stone and boulder play area. Stowe has brought my husband and I BACK to nature. Thank you! ” – Jodi Brodzinski
“My path to nature is everything…my sanity, my inspiration. Stowe has provided a space where I can meet my sister and bring my granddaughter. We have spent countless moments and made special memories there. Thank you to Stowe and everyone who keeps it special.” – Faith Edstrom
“Our path to nature runs through the Gardens at Stowe. We started to take our granddaughter to the gardens three years ago when she was one. We take her through the Gardens about every Friday; she loves it and looks forward to it. She really likes the Butterfly Bungalow in the summer and the Lost Hollow Children’s Garden. We now have twin granddaughters that are one and we have started the garden process with them. They love it! ” – Gary Findling
“My family’s path to nature started through membership at Stowe, which we thoroughly enjoy! The kids love to walk around the Gardens and see all the sights. My youngest one loves the fountains and always gravitates immediately to the sound of water. The older kid always enjoys meandering through the Gardens and somehow ending up at the carousel for some spins. We love to get out in nature and have been striving to get out more. We have been trying to hike more and the trails at Stowe have been a family favorite.” – Michael Branagan
Thank you to our members for sharing their personal paths to nature at Stowe! We hope you’ll take inspiration from their stories and explore the property on your terms to find your path, too. We’ll see you outside!
