When it comes to birds, it’s safe to say we are obsessed over here at Daniel Stowe Conservancy. From Northern Cardinals to Eastern Bluebirds, our feathered friends bring the Conservancy to life with color and song. If you’d appreciate more frequent visits to your neck of the woods, we have a solution for you!

Tree Swallow

Northern Cardinal
What you’ll need:
- Pinecones (dry and open)
- All-natural peanut butter or sunflower butter
- Birdseed (see suggestions below)
- String or twine (Jute cord works great)
- Scissors
Important notes:
- Avoid using store-bought scented pinecones; these are often treated with chemicals or fragrances that can harm birds. Use all-natural, foraged pinecones instead! There are many to be found here at Stowe.
- Only use natural, additive-free peanut butter. Take a look at the ingredient list to be sure that sugar, salt and oils are nowhere to be found.
- Always use natural, sturdy string such as jute, hemp, or cotton. Avoid fishing line, wire, or anything thin that could entangle or injure birds.
How to Make Your Pinecone Bird Feeder Ornaments
Step 1: Gather
Forage pinecones and gather all necessary materials on a smooth surface. You will also need a shallow bowl to fill with bird seed.
Step 2: Cut + Tie
Measure and cut pieces of string of about 10 inches long. Then, tie each string to the top of each pinecone using a slip-knot. Finally, tie both ends together to create a loop!
Step 3: Spread
Use a spoon or a butter knife to coat each pinecone in peanut butter, pressing it into the spaces between the scales. (Pro-tip? Lay down a piece of paper towel, as this will get a bit messy).
Step 4: Roll
While holding the top and the bottom of the pinecone, press and roll it into the dish of birdseed until it’s completely covered.
Step 5: Hang
Possibly the most important step is to hang your ornament in an ideal spot! Choose a tree or shrub where birds can perch easily and safely while they snack. Branches with natural foliage cover are best.

Choosing the Right Seeds for Your Backyard Birds
Here in Belmont, NC, you might spot cardinals, chickadees, finches and more. The seed you choose will make a big difference in the type of feathered friends you attract:
- Safflower Seeds: Perfect for attracting cardinals! Plus, squirrels tend to avoid them. If you live in a squirrel-filled neighborhood like I do, this will help prevent the squirrels from snatching the goods.
- Black Oil Sunflower Seeds: A backyard classic! Packed with energy and beloved by finches, chickadees and nuthatches.
- Millet: Great for sparrows, doves and juncos (especially ground feeders).
- Nyjer (Thistle) Seeds: Goldfinches can’t resist these tiny seeds! You could incorporate little into your birdseed mix for variety.
Why We Love This Craft
These feeders do more than look charming! They offer local birds a boost, transforming your backyard into a space that welcomes wildlife. Plus…did we mention how fun they are to make?
Why It’s Important to Support Birds
Birds are more than just beautiful visitors. They play an essential role in the overall health of our environment! They disperse seeds and help control insects naturally. Many species face challenges from habitat loss and food shortages. By providing safe food sources, you can help to sustain bird populations and contribute to a thriving ecosystem right in your own backyard!
