We invite you to join our local moth expert, Lior Carlson, for an evening of learning + observing these winged wonders of the night, as part of our Moonlight Series.

With over 3,000 species in North Carolina alone, moths are vital organisms in our Piedmont region, providing pollination for numerous native plants and food for birds, amphibians and mammals.

Your evening begins with a brief indoor presentation to familiarize you with how to identify our native moths and ways a home landscape can support them. Following this introduction, you will experience through observations these unique night creatures in our outdoor habitat, attracted to the collection sheets.

Lior Carlson, our entomologist for this evening, serves the Piedmont community through his nonprofit company Backyard Butterflies. Founded in 2018 with his colleague, John F. Jarvis, Backyard Butterflies provide opportunities in education, community outreach and fostering environments that support native butterflies and moths.

We highly recommend wearing closed-toe footwear. Most of the program will be outdoors, and restrooms will be available.
